A recorded lesson can teach a child the notes of a varisai. It cannot hear that they are singing the ri a shade flat, and a flat ri repeated for six months is very hard to unlearn. Every batch is live and small enough that each child sings alone and gets that correction while the note is still in the air.
Jodhpur’s families keep a strong oral tradition — Marwari bhajans, stories told by grandmothers, festivals kept at home in full. Children here usually come to us with stories already in their heads, and the work is giving them the Sanskrit and the structure behind what they have heard.
