A recorded lesson can teach a child the notes of a varisai. It cannot hear that they are singing the ri a shade flat, and a flat ri repeated for six months is very hard to unlearn. Every batch is live and small enough that each child sings alone and gets that correction while the note is still in the air.
Varanasi is the last city in India where we would claim to be adding something scarce, and we will not pretend otherwise — the traditional teaching here is deeper than ours. What we offer a Varanasi family is a fixed weekly schedule, a small batch and an English-medium explanation, which is a different thing from what a local guru offers, not a better one.
